A Franchise Doesn’t Mean A McDonald’s

Hooking up with already-established businesses and franchising is a great way to feel entrepreneurial, without taking on the risk.

“Franchises” have always had connotation as being synonymous with fast-food restaurants, but they can be a good way to dip your toes in the water of small business without shouldering the burdens that come with being an entrepreneur.  From MSNBC.com’s Eve Tahmincioglu:

More and more laid off workers are considering franchising as an alternative to working for someone else, according to experts in the industry.

Some see franchising as an easy way to entrepreneurship and economic independence. But becoming a successful franchisee takes a lot of hard work and money. It could take years before you’re able to replace your income.

For me, though, franchising wasn’t the answer.  I didn’t want to work by anyone else’s rules or agreements, and I wanted to grow my own business that, one day, I could look back upon in pride.

Not to say you can’t do so as a franchisee.  It’s just a different, albeit nice way, to make a living.

Tell us a bedtime story.  Have you considered franchising over being a straight-up entrepreneur?
